Nairobi restaurant closed after making headlines for barring black people

The Nairobi County government shut down the Chongqing Chinese Restaurant, after The Daily Nation first published a story this week about the establishment’s controversial policy barring black people after 5pm. The restaurant claims it was necessary following a robbery in 2013. “Unfortunately, some of the measures were inappropriate, we sincerely apologise for this,” the management said in a statement.

An investigation revealed that the establishment did not have a liquor licence, a health licence and a change-of-use licence — having been converted from a residential house to a restaurant. Consequently, the Nairobi County government temporarily shut it down until management complies.
