Things I regret doing for my ex

YOU'LL know that what you did was questionable, when you can look back at a past relationship and cringe at some of the 'acts of love' you did in an effort to please or keep your mate. If you can now admit to standing as guarantor time and time again for his payday loans; working outside in the boiling sun to wash his ride while he slept like a baby in the living room; or allowing him to drive your car to pick up his baby's mother while you took the bus to work, rest assured, you are not alone. If we were all to be honest, the revelations would be numerous, as silly or downright stupid actions done in the name of love transcend race, class and educational attainment.

Below some women share the cringe-worthy things they've done in the name of love that they now regret...

Renee, 22:
It was the second year into our four-year relationship and we were both in college. I gathered a few of my friends and planned a surprise party for him. Most of the funds was money I saved by starving myself at school. Truth be told, we all enjoyed the party, but it didn't change anything, nor did it save the relationship. He even took a girl he was cheating on me with to the party.

Sherice B, 31:
I told him that I was pregnant and then went to stay with my friend for two days while I told him I was admitted to the hospital because I had a miscarriage. He had got this other girl pregnant and I wanted to keep him for myself. I regret putting myself through all that trouble instead of leaving when I found out she was pregnant for him. We still ended up apart.

Lorraine D, 47:
I bought him a car to run taxi. But he only used my car to pick up and drop off his woman at work. He would even park at her office and wait for her in the evenings while I had to take the bus, because I didn't want to take him off his route!

Lori, 44:
I would wash his Nissan Sunny every Sunday evening while he would be in the a/c inside, watching football. The neighbours would laugh, but I didn't care. I would even wax it sometimes, until my joints ached. I would also wake up every morning to cook him a hearty Jamaican breakfast, and this was a man who expected me to peel banana and grate coconut like his mother. The sad thing is that he was married, so there was no future, but I loved him.

Donna, 28:
This girl called me to tell me she was pregnant for him. He told me some elaborate story about how she was a stalker and a liar, and how we needed to get her out of the picture so she would not threaten our relationship. Well, we both planned to physically harm her so she would stop the stalking. We drove to her office one night, intent on carrying out the plan. Luckily the poor girl wasn't working that night. And of course, I soon found out that not only had he had a relationship with her, but their baby was conceived with both their knowledge, and he panicked when she actually got pregnant and called me.

Paula, 32:
This was a few years ago, around the time the easy-loans businesses started popping up all over the place. My boyfriend realised how easy it was to secure a loan, and asked me to co-sign for him. Of course I agreed. He paid off the first one, low interest rate, but then he wanted another, and another. By this time the interest rate was almost 50 per cent. Long story short, he decided to quit his job and migrate, and it was only when HR called me that I realised that the documents I had signed as guarantor meant that because he had reneged, I was now responsible for his debt, which had ballooned to close to a million dollars.
